The picture below shows the exact function of a wall compression seal. The seals (shown in green) ensure that no groundwater or rainwater can penetrate the wall. By tightning the bolts in the seals, the seals expands itself and forms an impermeable block. This way the wall's protected from probable damage on the inside.
